The Fitzpatrick skin type classification system is a widely recognized method developed by dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick in the 1970s to estimate how different skin types respond to ultraviolet light exposure and has since become a standard tool in dermatology. The system categorizes skin into six types based on factors like genetic makeup, hair and eye color, and, crucially, how the skin reacts to the sun in terms of tanning and burning.
Understanding the Fitzpatrick skin type is essential for determining appropriate laser protocol for rejeuvenation and scar treatments, as the laser will interact with the pigments in the skin. All skin types can be treated with the UltraClear laser, but the darker the skin, the more care is needed.
Here is a brief introduction to the six Fitzpatrick skin types:
Type 1 | Very light skin that always burns, never tans and might have freckles |
Type 2 | Light colored skin that usually burns, tans minimally |
Type 3 | Golden honey colored skin that sometimes gets mild burns and tans uniformly |
Type 4 | Moderate brown skin that burns minimally and always tans well |
Type 5 | Dark brown skin that very rarely burns and tans very easily |
Type 6 | Verk dark brown skin that never burns |
